Dedicated to Keeping New Zealand Cleaner and Greener!
Awesome Target Shooting in the Forest!.jpg)
Big Sam texted me around 3:30pm on Friday - asking if I'd remembered my offer to help him fix his broken 6-24x40 scopes (see story of hunting at Huia).
Sure! I texted back, See you in an hour!
We aligned Sam's scope with a laser bore-sighter, and it all seemed fixed, so jumped in my van and headed to the forest.
Decided to call in to Westgate Hunting and Fishing to collect some ammo - and wouldn't you know it - I found the perfect double rifle hard-case - for just $100!
We sighted all the rifles in at 10 meters - Sam's Remington 597 semi, and my Papoose semi and Savage bolt action, then checking again at the standard range length of 25 meters - as per the photo to the right.
So far, so good!
Now for some fun!

Sam's placing out the usual assortment of cans, bottles and lids - this time at 50 meters!
Now we'll see if his sights are working as well as they should be.

This photo gives you a bit of an idea how far 50 meters is.
The targets in the left photo, are circled in the photo on the right.
Now - that's Sam in both photos, and if you look at the photo on the right, you'll notice that Sam is on this side, and my rifle, and where I will be shooting from, are on the far side.
Important lesson. Semiautos eject to the right! I got showered in hot shells! All good though, and part of the adventure.
However, now I know why the guys at the Rifle Club didn't like to be on my right side during a match. Nothing like a red hot shell to break your concentration!
So - how well did we do?
Below are two bottle tops, the top one shot by me with my Savage Bolt Action, and the bottom one shot by Big Sam - with his Remington Auto - both at over 50 meters!
I'd say we fixed his scopes! And I'd say my savage is shooting pretty darn fine as well.
